March was Reading Month at Michigan International Prep School, a virtual charter school that has a learning lab in Howell! On Thursday, March 26, State Sen. Lana Theis read three books via Google Hangouts to a very excited and engaged group of kindergarten through 5th grade students and families from MIPS.

Elsewhere, many Michigan families are reportedly seeking to enroll their children into cyber schools — public charter schools that primarily provide instruction online. But, with the two official count periods already completed, current law won’t allow funds to follow the student to the new school for the rest of the academic year. Living in Michigan always creates challenging issues with school calendars and trying to predict the number of “snow days.” Given the extraordinary weather we have seen over the last 6 weeks, many schools are asking questions about what it all means.
Per state law, schools (other than cyber charter schools) are allowed to count 6 “snow days” toward their days and hours requirement. The State Superintendent of Public Instruction may allow up to 3 more "relief" days. So far, nearly 200 districts have applied for the relief...Read more
